What is There to Celebrate?

Published on 4 July 2024 at 10:30

I would like to know as it does not seem that the spirit of the day is being validated by the reality of the moment in any way, shape, or form.

What new freedom have we gained? Is prosperity trending positively for the people? Have we stayed true to the spirit of the revolution?

The stark reality of the present moment draped across the American landscape is such that it renders these questions rhetorical beyond any possible doubt. We are living through a moment in the history of the United States of America that will forever be remembered for a severe regression away from the tenets on which the nation was founded.  A blatant pivot on the part of the oligarchical ruling class away from the tenets that established this nation in exchange for obscene wealth hoarding at the expense of the nation and the people that make it up.

Any celebrations today are wildly inappropriate in the "land of the free" as the oligarchy strips the people of their bodily autonomy, their right to the public spaces, and any semblance of justice under the rule of law. The corruption is such that, these violations of the fundamental rights that the most outwardly "patriotic" of us tout as proof positive of the greatness of the Unites States of America, once would have been perpetuated behind closed doors and under the cover of darkness are now committed out in the open in board daylight in brazen defiance of god and country. All this is done with not so much as a blink of the eye from the contingent that ardently exercises one of the only rights that have yet to be mutilated in order to stockpile implements of death in the event of a tyrannical government coming to power and blatantly violating our fundamental rights to such a degree.

We have entered an age of impunity for the powers that be and misery for every other you and me.

This Independence Day there is a putrid stench in the air and it is not simply the ghastly stale odor of spent fireworks that lingers in the air for days after our misplaced celebrations. It is the malodorous stench of unchecked corruption and apathy in the supposed "home of the brave" men and women that call themselves Americans. Maybe, just maybe, it is also the miasma that wafts from the corpses of our now alienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
