Late September

The blazing heat of summer lingers

as if it intends to remain with us indefinitely

forever young and violent

In time, the unmistakable crisp autumn nights arrive

with gentle breezes that caress my face

in the manner of an old friend's embrace

This evening sky envelopes me in a soft cloak of surcease,

respite from the brutality of the arid day

Here in the autumnal twilight air I breath deep

and my soul knows peace for a brief, passing moment

my heart is filled with hope

that sweet autumn days will soon being their stay
