It looks like we have another mask trend making the rounds in and around the COVID conscious community. When I last took the time to consider the trends within the COVID conscious community, I found myself positively delighted and pleasantly surprised with just how sweet and communal the vibes created by the "ya'll making?" seemed overall. At the time, I took the time to explain the reasons behind my general aversion to trends of most kinds. This time, however, the vibes are not just the polar opposite of the "ya'll masking?" movement, (which continues to trend rather strongly I am happy to report) but they are down right spiteful (which is right in the center of my wheelhouse). As I have explained to a variety of my mutuals online by this point, I am surviving out of
pure unadulterated spite these days. As such, a trend born out of the spite that an entire community feels towards the type of mentality that promotes the ridiculous brand of denialism that is currently doing so much harm to all segments of society, but specifically to all the people that are particularly susceptible to severe illness or death caused by COVID-19, is a trend that I can naturally get behind.
I can think of no better use of a public dogpiling than to make an example of someone with an established platform carelessly, or worse yet purposefully, promoting the type of policies that are currently endangering the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of millions of Americans. Policies that seek to erase or ban masks are not only putting the health of millions in danger, but (whether intentionally or not, and it is mostly likely intentionally) these policies are actively promoting eugenics and genocide by actively leaving the most vulnerable exposed to a disease that is certain to destroy their quality of life if not murder them outright.
As such, I was delighted to see that the Covid conscious community had dispensed with their saint-like level of patience and civility in favor of giving full voice to their spite and resentment of the dangerously ignorant notions currently threatening to put all of us in further danger amid an ongoing global pandemic with a burgeoning one no clearly visible on the horizon.
Mapping the trajectory of trend can often be a bit of maze, but in this case, this all seems to have begun when an individual that identifies as Tim Miller on Twitter expressed their displeasure with the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris had released a campaign advertisement that included people wearing masks. The issue as Miller puts it is that, in their opinion, the inclusion of people in masks, "salts the vibes" as it were. This "quibble" garnered a variety of objections from the COVID conscious community. As you might expect, given the escalation of the situation, Miller's response to these objection was less that tactful.
Here is the offending tweet that started it all. As it is made abundantly clear by Tim Miller in their own words, they are opposed to COVID conscious people being represented in political ads. It seems Miller believes that the sight of masks somehow detracts from the general enjoyment of these ads. Additionally, it is evident that Miller is of the opinion that the precautionary policies implemented during the official state of emergency during the early days of the still ongoing pandemic are something to avoid implementing ever again for some unfathomable reason that even Miller might not be able to fully explicate.
Rather than take the concerns expressed by COVID conscious community on board in good faith, Miller seemingly decided to mock them by implying that they are the craze fans of N95s in much the same way that Taylor Swift's fans, known as Swifties, are stereotypically portrayed. The matter might have been just another ignorant privileged throw away take had it not been for this additional derogatory comment on the part of Miller. The reaction from the COVID conscious community came on quickly, and made itself felt far and wide, spreading not unlike the massive wildfires currently consuming much of the earth at present (yet another reason why banning masks is absolutely asinine).
Here is the less than tactful retort by Tim Miller to the response from the COVID conscious community to their original comment on the representation of masks in the future political ads for the Vice President's candidacy for President of the United States of America. As is evident, Miller compares the COVID conscious community to Swifties with the evident intent to insult as the stereotypical view of Swifties, by those that are not Taylor Swift fans, is that they are a ravenous group that lacks reasoning and sensibility.
Yet, in the typical fashion of the kind of wonderfully colorful people that make up the COVID conscious community, their spite has been expressed in the most fantastically catty and sarcastic manner possible. For two days now, Twitter has been inundated with waves of photographs and videos of COVID conscious community members in respirators, ala the "ya'll masking" movement, claiming that they are "salting the vibes" in full-throated mockery of Tim Miller and his tone deaf comments regarding the representation of respirators in the Vice President's future political ads.
I thought that it could not get much better than the wonderfully inclusive vibes of the "ya'll masking" movement but I stand corrected. The spitefully sarcastic vibes of the "salting the vibes" movement are absolutely delicious. It is absolutely wonderful to see the COVID conscious community not only stop holding back their displeasure with the prevalent stupidity that propagates amongst the general public regarding the state of the pandemic and the dangers therein for all parties involved (which is absolutely everyone with a pulse), but for them to do it in a manner that is so authentically characteristic of the kind of wonderfully colorful people that gravitate towards the movement. The time to dispense with civility as it pertains to this pandemic and the pandemics looming on the horizon is now past due and it fills me with great hope to see people use their rage in creative, positive, and productive ways. It is clear that there is hope for the future because these are the people that will remain when all is said and done.
