So, you are thinking about getting into home audio production? Allow me to be the first to welcome you to the roller coaster ride that is home audio production. It is a world that can often seem inhospitable or downright hostile to the uninitiated. However, I strive to roll out the welcome wagon for all new comers in the hope that a good start will lead a to long and fruitful journey in audio production for those that are just starting out.
The birth of somberamarth
When I began my journey in audio production nearly twenty years ago, I found the home audio production community to be somewhat inhospitable, closed-off, and elitist (little has changed within some pockets of the overall community). I was initially dejected but I have always been headstrong and I refused to back down. I was determined to learn to produce my own audio projects and become an effective audio engineer.
In fact, it was because of these experiences that SOMBERAMARATH was born. My personal philosophy is that knowledge is useless if it is not applied and disseminated so that others can continue to explore and discover beyond what the previous generation has been able to accomplish. As such, I began to learn and teach about audio production whenever and wherever I could. It became my modus operandi as it were.
I want To Hear your music
Please, do not misunderstand, I am not trying to paint myself as some altruistic saint. I am definitely not. Much of my motivation to operate the way that I do is for somewhat selfish reasons, chief amongst them is the fact that I want to always have new and exciting music available to me. It has been my personal experience that some of the best new music never makes it to mass distribution of any kind. I have had the privilege of listening to and even being part of much of this kind of music during the entire course of my musical journey and that is great but, in many cases, these have been one-off experiences that I can never experience again. I would much rather live in a reality where I can revisit those musical experiences whenever I want. Therefore, I make it a point to welcome and assist newcomers as best as I can at all times in the hopes that they will immortalize their work so that I, and many others, may enjoy it long after they have moved on to other projects (something that happens all too often in creative pursuits, especially in the world of music).
Welcome to The roller coaster
All this to say welcome to the wonderfully rewarding and equally frustrating world of audio production. I will do my best to support you in your journey with my meager wealth of hard-won knowledge. I am by no means an expert and my work is not commemorated anywhere of note but I have learned a great deal from myriad mistakes, experiments, and invaluable experiences in all aspects of music and audio production. My hope is that I will be able to pass onto you something of value or at least be an accompanying encouraging force as you forge your own path in the world of audio production.
What is next?
In the ensuing articles, I will attempt to distill and disseminate what I have learned about home audio production over the course of the last two decades. I will do my best to grab you by the scruff and pull you back from the abyss long before you ever realize there was an abyss before you. Ultimately, my hope is that this will ensure that you can get on to the business of producing quality audio recordings and spend as little time dealing with the unnecessary headaches that can so often plague the world of audio production in general and to a larger extent the world of home audio production specifically.
Just keep in mind, as you move forward, that this is a continual learning experience, that you will improve with time and practice, and that you should trust your artistic vision to guide you above all else. The ultimate goal is for you to have the understanding necessary to be confidence enough to do it yourself and defy all expectations. The journey is dynamic but I promise you it is worth taking.
